Amsterdamis David O. Russell’s latest film for Disney and, judging from the trailer, the wholly original period comedy might as well redefine what star-studded really means with a cast that boasts the names of Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Rami Malek, and even Taylor Swift, just to name a few.

This will be Russell’s ninth overall feature-length movie for a director who first earned praise for his work inI Heart HuckabeesandThe Fighterbefore earning further glory forSilver Linings Playbookin 2012. However, this time around Russell reunited with hisAmerican Hustlestar Christian Baleto put together what is being dubbed a crime epic revolving around three friends and a series of shocking events in American history.

The opening lines inAmsterdam’s trailer already say a lot about the film, as it begins withnotorious Oscars presenter Chris Rock, who also stars in the movie, perplexedly greeting the three protagonists and their “dead white man in a box” before switching to the group telling their own story. Bale’s voice tells the audience, “we formed a pact and we swore to protect each other, no matter what” and dismissing some troubling murder accusations. The entire preview is backed by Ten Years After’s 1971 hit, “I’d Love to Change the World,” far ahead of the movie’s 1930s setting but a song that, nonetheless, slots in perfectly withAmsterdam’s imagery of Bale fumbling for his eye and the cautionary tale that “a lot of this actually happened.”

Besides the aforementioned stars, the rest of the cast isrounded off by Zoe Saldaña, Mike Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Michale Shannon, Anya Taylor-Joy, Leland Orser and Sean Avery. There are also other prominent European actors like Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Alessandro Nivola.Amsterdamis a production made under the 20th Century Studios umbrella and its historical plot will have many salivating over its potential.

Like the vast majority of his films,Amsterdamis also written by Russel himself, and this story about how a doctor, nurse, and a lawyer came to be friends must have shown tons of promise in order to convince such a stellar group of actors. Funnily enough,Amsterdamwas not shot in Amsterdam, as the movie was filmed in Los Angeles towards the beginning of last year.

Bale of course is currently promotingThor: Love and Thunder, his first crack a the MCU, whileRobbie is currently filming theBarbiemoviealongside her plastic-looking co-star Ryan Reynolds.

Amsterdamis scheduled to release in theaters on Aug 02, 2025.
