Survival games likeValheimcan teach players harsh lessons quickly. In the challenging world in which players are dropped, each biome hosts its own array of difficult enemies. But players needn’t even leave their own base in order to discover the challenging nature of the game. In the latest example of this, oneValheimplayer met their death at the blades of their own windmill.

Valheimwas released in February 2021 and is a survival and sandbox game with an enormous open world. Developed by Iron Gate Studio, the game takes place in a world where warriors need to earn themselves a spot in the halls of Valhalla.

The unfortunate player in this clip is u/Burlycop2057, and it features a tough moment for them. It opens with this player on one of the stone walls they have erected around their base. Situated on the edge ofValheim’s dangerous Plains biome, this player is already putting themselves at risk by not wearing much for armor. Instead of resolving this equipment issue, they throw on a Lox Cape and begin walking around their walls. They get closer and closer to the windmill, which just reaches over the top of the walls, and get struck by its blades. This initial impact reduces the player’s health from 25 to 8 and knocks them off the wall, where they die from the remaining fall damage.

It is difficult to say whether this clip serves as instruction on what not to do or if it is actually a mental mistake made by a player, but either way, it showsjust how deadlyValheimcan be. Those players that enter biomes they aren’t prepared for, forget to keep their character’s health high, or mistakenly attack too many enemies will quickly be punished. Even those who forget that windmills can deal damage get hit with serious consequences.

These challenges and consequences can be supremely frustrating for players, however, especially as they start out in the game.Advancement inValheimrequires players to grind their way in one biome before being able to handle the challenges of the next. When the difference between life and death can be a windmill in a game, at least some players are likely going to switch to something else.

Noting that, however,Valheimhas seen success since its launch, and its challenges have brought in numerous players to its world. The satisfaction of overcoming the enemies and biomes is a large reason behind that success. Regardless of how players feel about the game, many can agree that this player met a terrible and unfortunate end.
