A former Sony employee recently opened up about his experience working for a particular PlayStation studio. According to him, Sony was interested in recreating some of its older flagship titles for the modern era. There was an idea that some of these titles could be remade from the ground up with modern technology to give them present-day graphical fidelity, andGod of War 1andUnchartedwere possible candidates for this process.
The employee in question is Michael Mumbauer, a former head at Sony San Diego Studio. He revealed his news toTwisted MetalandGod of WardirectorDavid Jaffe during one of Jaffe’s latest Gabbin+Gamin segments. Mumbauer claims that Sony originally had him overseeing a visual arts group that provided support to other Sony gaming studios, but eventually, his role took on a new form geared more toward remakes and remasters.

Mumbauer wanted to create things like TV shows to expand IPs but couldn’t, so he pursued remakes and remasters instead. His timing was perfect because Shawn Layden was head of SIE World Studios at the time. Layden also shared an interest in remakes and remasters and actually participated in the reveal forCrash Bandicoot N. SaneTrilogy. Mumbauer wanted to remake games such asUnchartedandGod of Warwith modern-day graphics, but such things sadly never came to fruition.
It’s important to note that the idea of aGod of WarandUnchartedremake was just that — an idea. Both titles might have been successful if they got something like aFinal Fantasy 7 Remaketreatment, but there’s no guarantee how Sony San Diego would have approached the projects. It’s also unclear if the projects were even pitched and why no one at the studio felt like they couldn’t get off the ground.
That said, Sony had such an interest in remastering and remaking games that it seemingly created a dedicated development team for it at Sony San Deigo. Said team still exists, is over 200 people strong, and is currently working on a new title, which some believe to be therumoredUncharted 5. Maybe in the future, Sony will invest in remaking the originalUnchartedgames along with theGod of Wartrilogy, but it doesn’t seem like that is happening any time soon.
