Out of all those titles, none of them have really matched the success of the game they spun off from. Not only that, but these titles were also shuttered rather quickly, for a plethora of reasons. And if that continues into the next spin-off, then fans may have little reason to keep supporting these unique blocky adventures.
Minecraft Spin-Offs Are Facing an Increasingly Large Uphill Battle
After Telltale got to play around in the world ofMinecraftfor a bit and Mojang experimented with augmented reality, the studio released its own fully-fledged spin-off title in 2020.Minecraft Dungeonstook the formula to the dungeon crawlergenre for a whole new type of experience, which was met with mixed reception. While many critics thought that the game was charming, it lacked much substance. Mojang would end up releasing six DLC packs to expand upon the concept and would bring it to arcades, but after only a year, the content stream for the base game would come to an end.
In 2023, Mojang attempted the spin-off again withthe RTSMinecraft Legends. Just like with its predecessor, the game was met with mixed reception over the actual content within. The art style was charming and the ideas were interesting, but there was not enough to excite the fanbase. But unlikeMinecraft Dungeons, this game received no DLC to expand it in interesting new ways. Additionally, the studio has recently announced that support for this game has come to an end, not even a full year after it hit store shelves.
The Next Minecraft Spin-Off Needs to Do a Lot to Excite Audiences
WhileMinecrafthas seen countless updatesduring its time that have kept it going strong for more than a decade, the spin-offs have not had that same level of support. None of the games have enthralled the fanbase either, with most of them coming and going with a whimper. Even though it will likely be a while before the studio is ready to announce its next spin-off attempt, whatever form it takes, it cannot repeat this same model.
Ifthe nextMinecraftspin-offalso fails to excite the fanbase, then players will have little reason to keep supporting these new adventures. Mojang has already burnt them two times; a third time could very well be the final straw. ManyMinecraftfans may have even turned their backs on the concept already, which means that the studio will have a lot to prove with this next experience. If it wants the game to have any chance of making an impact, then it needs to be a fantastic journey from beginning to end, or it may be doomed to a similar fate as all the spin-offs before it.
Not much is known about where Mojang plans to take theMinecraftIP next. There is a chance that the days of spin-offs have come to an end after the closing ofMinecraft Legends. But if that is not the case, then the studio will need to make sure it does all it can to win those players back. WhileMinecraftwill likely always be one of the biggest names in the sandbox genre, if Mojang wants one of these spin-offs to match that success, then it needs to do something truly exciting next time around.
