The Last of UsandThe Last of Us 2have been praised critically, and a big part of that success is their focus on narrative. With thedivisive story choices ofThe Last of Us 2, there is currently a debate on whether a sequel to the game is planned and, if so, what it would mean for the future of the series. Reddit user u/wtfcommittee decided to use AI to generate a script for a sequel of the game. In a post to Reddit, wtfcommittee posts an image where they ask an AI to write a script forThe Last of Us 3that starts at the end ofThe Last of Us 2where Ellie spares Abby. They also included a condition that the fireflies would be the antagonists of the plot.
The AI-generated plot starts with Abby and Lev meeting up with the Fireflies who are still attempting to cure the Cordyceps pandemic. Things take a dark twist when Lev informs Abby that the Fireflies intend to kidnap Dina’s child to bait Ellie so that they can create a cure from her body. Lev convinces Abby that they have to stop the Fireflies, and they head out to protect Ellie from their attack. During the process, Abby is killed and gives a touching monologue to Ellie about her regrets for killing Joel inThe Last of Us 2. Abby then dies and Lev, alongside some fellow Seraphite survivors, creates a cure without sacrificing anyone.
Fellow Redditors immediately made jokes about the quality of the writing, especially the dialogue. One user commented that the story reads as if the people who hated the story forThe Last of Us 2had written it. Another user commented that outside of the dialogue, they liked the idea of the sequel being about forgiveness. Currently, there have been no announcements forThe Last of Us 3, butNaughty Dog is currently working on a multiplayer gamethat exists within the same universe.
The Last of Us 2is available now exclusively for PlayStation 4.
