The Callisto Protocolcomes from Striking Distance Studios and is published by its parent Krafton. Lately, new details have been shared aboutThe CallistoProtocol’s development and gameplay, with information shared about its connection, or lack thereof, to Krafton’sPUBG: Battlegrounds.
It had been explicitly stated thatThe Callisto Protocolbelonged onPUBG: Battlegrounds’ canonical timeline, though it took place 300 years into the future, which would consequently mean that it is inPUBG: Battlegrounds’ future as well. However, clarifications have been made since this information has been shared, and it appears as if this far-flung connection betweenThe Callisto ProtocolandPUBG: Battlegroundshas already run its course.

In a post released earlier today, Schofield announces thatThe Callisto Protocolis effectively “its own world, story, and universe.” Acknowledging thatThe Callisto Protocolwas previously meant to coincide with thePUBGtimeline, it has apparently expanded past any narrative logistics for this connection to be tangible, and thus it is no more. It is uncertain why this change was made in particular, and suddenly as it seems, but Schofield states thatThe Callisto Protocolwill “still have little surprises for fans,” which may imply thatPUBG: BattlegroundsEaster eggs may still be included.
This decision was possibly made in reference to fan feedback that questioned the connection between both games. However obscure or redundant, the tether betweenThe Callisto ProtocolandPUBG: Battlegroundswas likely requested by Krafton and was never intended to be a significant part ofThe Callisto Protocol’s lore anyway. This clean separation as clarified by Schofield suggests that its connection toPUBG: Battlegroundshas done nothing for either IP, and that Schofield wishes for it to not be lumped in with the influential battle royale title.
Indeed, fans were concerned with this narrative connection due to the implications it made aboutThe Callisto Protocol’s story, and if it would be obligated to referencePUBG: Battlegroundschiefly. This would have arguably disrupted fans’ immersion into Schofield’s new action-horror IP, but fans may now either be pleased or displeased withThe Callisto Protocol’s decision to adopt its own original universe.
New information aboutThe Callisto Protocolhas detailed specific weapons players will have at their disposal, the biophage creatures they will face, and the announcement that actor Josh Duhamel is playing the lead protagonist role of Jacob Lee. More will certainly be announced and shown off soon as details continue to hit the public, especially with demos, screenshots, and other content being shown forThe Callisto Protocolbehind closed doors.
The Callisto Protocolis scheduled to release in 2022 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
