Stranger Thingsstar Maya Hawke shared her unfiltered thoughts about the recent United States Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood. The actress held nothing back as she referred to her own family’s history with abortion.
TheU.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wadeafter nearly five decades spurred protests and condemnation across the globe. Among the many celebrities to voice their outrage was Hawke, who joined the cast ofStranger Thingsduring season 3.

During an appearance onThe Tonight Show, with a few obscenities here and there, encouraged by both Jimmy Fallon and the audience, Hawke discussed her mother’s history with abortion, and how they discussed the topic following the news of the overturn. “We just got into talking aboutthe Supreme Court rulingand this essay that my mom wrote a couple of months ago when they were putting these further restrictions on abortion access, and it was sort of preceding this whole thing,” Hawke said. “My mom wrote this really beautiful essay about her abortion that she got when she was really young, and about how if she hadn’t have had it, she wouldn’t have become the person that she’d become, and I wouldn’t exist, and how both of my parents' lives would’ve been totally derailed if she hadn’t had access to safe and legal health care — fundamental health care.”
Hawke,whose mother is Uma Thurmanand whose father is Ethan Hawke, referred to Thurman’s September 2021 Washington Post op-ed that discussed her experience with abortion. She also condemned Texas' abortion law, one of many anti-abortion laws that started the snowball effect that led the Supreme Court to make its ruling last week. In her essay, Thurman said that by sharing her experience, she hoped “some light will shine through, reaching women and girls who might feel a shame that they can’t protect themselves from and have no agency over.”
“Of course, wealthy people will always be able to get abortions, but so many people, because of this ruling this week, will not only not be able to pursue their dreams, but actually lose their lives and be unsafe,” Hawke continued. “And I just wanted to say that, like, f*** the Supreme Court.” Following cheers from the audience, Fallon reassured her with a smile, saying, “you’re able to absolutely say that.” “I can say, ‘F*** the Supreme Court’? Oh, f*** the Supreme Court. Yeah, rock on,” Hawke replied. “But we’re going to keep fighting, and we’re gonna win, like our grandmothers did.”
Later during the interview, Hawke spoke briefly aboutStranger Thingsseason 4 vol. 2, which comes out later this week. Hawke, who plays Robin on the popular Netflix series, said she hasn’t seen the episodes yet and claims to have trouble remembering exactly what happens. “I’m excited because I’m so excited to see how it all wraps up,” she said of the final two episodes.
Stranger Thingsseason 4 vol. 2 will be released on Netflix on June 09, 2025.
