Summary

OneStarfieldplayer came remarkably close to recreating the exact look of an NCR Ranger fromFallout: New Vegasin Bethesda’s latest title. Their achievement underlinesStarfield’simmense role-playing potential that many reviewers have been praisingin recent days.

Warning! Minor gameplay spoilers (vague equipment location pointers) for Starfield ahead. The game itself isn’t scheduled to release until Wednesday, but anyone who bought one of its higher-tier editions has been able toplayStarfieldin early accesssince September 1. At least 245,000 fans did just that via Steam alone, according to the game’s peak concurrent player numbers revealed by Valve’s platform API.

The RPG’s early adopter demographic also includes Reddit user rileycavanaugh, who already spent enough time withStarfieldto obtain two distinct pieces of equipment that can be combined into a look closely resembling that of an NCR Ranger fromFallout: New Vegas. And though the original outfit was functionally an armor set, itsStarfieldrecreation only consists of clothing pieces. Its replacement for the NCR Ranger Combat Armor is the First Officer Outfit that can be obtained in the Cheyenne star system, whereas the accompanying headgear, called the Ryujin Guard Helmet, can be found in the Volii galaxy.

The outfit is somewhat easier to procure, not least because it can be looted early on during the quest to join the Freestar Collective Rangers. Meanwhile, the helmet that the game classifies as a hat is used by the majority of Ryujin’s security personnel, much like its name implies. It’s hence obtainable by either killing one of the corporation’s guards or joining Ryujin Industries and progressing its quest line. The faction is based out of Neon, a futuristic city on the aquatic planet of Volii Alpha that’s heavily inspired by the cyberpunk genre.

The original NCR Ranger uniform has a slightly heavier duster and a military-grade gas mask with a hard hat instead of a singular piece of headgear, but the overall combination of the First Officer Outfit and Ryujin Guard Helmet does a pretty good job at matching the look of theFallout: New Vegascombat garb inspired by real-life riot armor getups. Players adamant to get even closer to the iconic appearance of NCR Rangers will plausibly be able to do so in the near future. Asset reskins and equipment packs are among the simplest types of mods to make, so it’s likely only a question of time beforeStarfieldmodders get to addingFallout: New Vegas-inspired content to the PC version of the game.

That notwithstanding,Starfieldwon’t have official mod support at launch, and though Bethesda confirmed that the game’s Creation Kit will arrive sometime after its full-fledged release, it has yet to attach a specific date to that promise. The lack of official tools won’t stop enthusiasts from pumping outStarfieldcontent, but the floodgates won’t truly open until Bethesda delivers its much-anticipated modding kit.
