When Cal Kestis is first found on Bracca and rescued from the Second Sister, Cere Junda and Greez Dritus of the Stinger Mantis are only a lowly pair inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.Cere’s own agenda is undertaken by Greezas the Mantis’ captain, and the two miraculously find Cal, who is then tasked with finding a Jedi holocron that contains the location of other Force-sensitives in the galaxy. No new Force-sensitives are found throughout the duration ofStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderwithout being brought onto the Mantis as a befriended crewmate.
Instead, Cere and Cal’s journey to uncover the mysteries of the Zeffo leads them to finding Nightsister Merrin on Dathomir, who agrees to accompany Cal and his crew aboard the ship. Players can alsooptionally obtain a Bogling companion on Bogano, where the adorable droid BD-1 is also found, which then sheepishly hides within the Mantis as a stowaway. The potential for companions inStar Wars Jedi: Survivoris fascinating, but the present crew may be in peril as their fates and whereabouts are currently and purposefully undetermined.

Where the Mantis Crew Leaves Off in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderconcludes with about as open of an ending as it could have, with Cal making the executive decision to destroy the holocron, leaving the fates of all known Force-sensitives up to the Force. This cliffhanger implies that the Mantis crew will not be looking for Force-sensitives inStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, and their choices and exploration is now completely unknown.
The crew does not seem to have any other goal or agenda between Cal, BD-1, Cere, Greez, and Merrin, so the narrative thread that Respawn chooses to follow is open-ended and enigmatic. Because of how significant the concept of companions is inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it would surely be a mistake forStar Wars Jedi: Survivorto abandon that system.

The sequel should feature new NPC companions found on diverse planets that players can potentially recruit, adding to the Mantis family in a meaningful way that could make for interesting planet-hopping side quests. The infinite potentialStar Wars Jedi: Survivorhas with this premise, as well asits canonical era setting inStar Wars, will surely make for an exciting narrative if Respawn does pursue it in the sequel. However, there is an ominous atmosphere lingering in the cinematic reveal teaser forStar Wars Jedi: Survivorthat may suggest the Mantis crew will be in some sort of peril.

The Mantis Crew is Notably Absent in the Teaser for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s teaseris brief and full of dubious phrases to parse and characters to identify. Following a short period of time when it was rumored that Cal may not be returning as the sequel’s protagonist, that has since been refuted as Cal and BD-1 appear.
Cal is seen battling againsta hooded assailant who wields a red-colored lightsaberand a blaster, and Cal and BD-1 also stumble upon an unidentified figure suspended in a bacta tank, who single-handedly secured the majority of discourse following the teaser’s reveal. It is also revealed that Cal’s lightsaber will end up in the possession of some enemy of Cal’s at some point, but plot details are otherwise unknown.
Rather, a shot of the Mantis’ interior depicts the ship crashing onto a planet with sparks igniting from its holotable, which may also be teasing what planet they have arrived at. No characters are shown within the ship as it crash-lands, and none of the other crew members are seen throughout the teaser at all.
The only thing that is certain is thatCal and his droid companionare alive, and may be on their own journey of discovery. In terms of the whereabouts of the crew, it is up to anyone’s imagination to fill in those blanks until more information is eventually shared aboutStar Wars Jedi: Survivor. But in the meantime, there are a few possibilities for what the crew’s fate will be during the events of the sequel.
The Potential Fate of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s Mantis Crew
The crew’s absence automatically insinuates that they are in some sort of trouble, if not dead, making the sequel’s tone already much darker than the original. It is possible that the crew is simply scattered and fending for themselves,asStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s subtitle may infer, or that they may have been taken and are being held captive in order to get to Cal and BD-1, who may have been able to escape. If true, players may be tasked with traveling to different planets and rescuing each crewmate. If their fates are worse, such as if the crew is suddenly revealed to be dead, players may instead find new crew members and avenge Cal’s old ones.
Of course, there is a possibility that the Mantis crew is completely finein the beginning ofStar Wars Jedi: Survivor. The teaser is purposefully dour, but the crew’s absence from it does not necessarily mean that they have met a tragic end. It would make sense if, duringStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, the Mantis crew is attacked or hunted by the Empire following their run-in with Darth Vader himself at Nur’s Fortress Inquisitorius, which Cal, Cere, and BD-1 barely managed to escape from.
This close shave would certainly aggravate Vader, who could have then sent dedicated forces to capture and enslave the Mantis crew. In terms of theeffect this would have onStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s gameplay, players could be encountering even more bounty hunters or Imperial forces than they had inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and getting from planet-to-planet could be even more precarious if the crew is indeed being hunted.
Basically any theory or assumption about what the Mantis crew’s fate is, or where they will be at the start ofStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, is valid for now until more of the sequel is officially shared. It would be unfortunate to already lose the Mantis crew established inStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Ordersince their budding friendships have just begun, and there are a lot of potential avenues their stories could take them, while the sequel may inevitably introduce more characters as companions entering into their fold.
