Many fans are reasonably excited for the upcomingNew Pokemon Snap. From what’s been seen in the trailer,New Pokemon Snapappears to be asequel to the 1999Pokemon Snaptitle that fans wanted a remake or sequel of for a long time.
As can be seen in the aforementioned trailer, many features and mechanics have carried over from the originalPokemon SnapforNew Pokemon Snap. The idea of islands only inhabited by Pokemon with no humans also seems to have been carried over. With ideas being carried over, it’s possible that scrapped content from the original title could appear in various ways or be referenced inNew Pokemon Snap.

Pokemon Snap’s Cut Safari Stage
Pokemon Snapwas originally developed for a Nintendo 64 add-on known as the 64DD. However, due to the low sales of this add-on, production was moved for the main console instead. Test footage and promotional footage for the 64DD version showed a safari-like area that the player would tour. This stage however was cut from the full game, so it’s very possible that the safari-like area shown in the trailer forNew Pokemon Snapcould be based on this scrapped area.
Something very important to note in this scrapped area isthe presence of Ekans. This Pokemon doesn’t appear at all in the retail release ofPokemon Snap, but it still appears in the footage. If Ekans were to appear in a similar location to how its positioned in this test footage could prove that the safari area inNew Pokemon Snapis referencing this lost level that the public has been unable to play with or look at outside of low quality pictures and footage.

Another likely possibility for this stage could be that it was simply aproof of concept stagedue to the very high variety of Pokemon that could be seen in it. Broken animations and different models might support this theory as this stage was also from much earlier in development; however, this doesn’t disprove the safari area shown in theNew Pokemon Snaptrailer could be a reference to this cut level.
Pokemon Snap’s Cut Ghost Stage
Unlike the safari stage, this cut stage is far more mysterious with no gameplay footage or screenshots available for it. The only evidence of its existence is music provided byPokemon Snap’s composer, Ikuko Mimori, for this scrapped area. Due to this, it’s unknown if the level actually made it beyond conceptual works. The track is known as “Fantastic Horror”.
Due to the title of this song, many fans and players have speculated that this stage could’ve been themed around ghost-type Pokemon, but was cut due to there only being threeghost Pokemon availableat that point.

As of the current generation, there are now 54different ghost-type Pokemon, meaning that a ghost themed area inNew Pokemon Snapcould have a lot of potential. With the on-rails style of traveling, going through a haunted house filled with ghost Pokemon would be like a fun and tame haunted house ride at an amusement park.

With all of the new Pokemon that have been added to the series, there are a lot of possibilities for Pokemon to find as well as photo opportunities. With Pikachu likely appearing in every level like in the original title, there could be a fun moment wherePikachu encounters Mimikyuand gets spooked. With how the original title used situations that referenced various Pokemon’s pokedex entries, there could additionally be very frightening moments with Pokemon such as Gengar and Cofagrigus. If this stage were to be revisited, it could even be possible for a remixed or cover of “Fantastic Horror” to play during the stage’s length.
Pokemon Snap’s Scrapped Boss
Ikuko Mimori additionally released another music track from a scrapped part ofPokemon Snap. This one was from a scrapped boss fight involved with the aforementioned horror stage, and with the horror stage being scrapped, this boss had to go. What’s interesting about this is how the closest thing to aboss inPokemon Snapis Mew, which is one of the last Pokemon that players can photograph in the game. However, actually taking a picture of it proves to be very difficult due to its psychic bubble that reflects when a photo is being taken.
These facts have led fans to speculate that this boss may in fact could’ve been the legendary Pokemon, Mewtwo. With Mewtwo being created in thePokemon Mansion in Kanto, it could be possible that Mewtwo could’ve appeared as a boss of sorts in a haunted mansion stage. This brings the possibility of Mewtwo or other boss-likePokemon appearing inNew Pokemon Snap. With how players needed to hatch the three legendary birds inPokemon Snapin order to photograph them, it could be possible that players could need to break Mewtwo out inNew Pokemon Snap.
Another possibility for a boss could’ve been the ghost seen in Pokemon Tower in the Kanto-basedPokemongames. This ghost turns out to be the ghost of a dead Marowak that players must defeat in order to scale the tower. With Alolan Marowak now being part ofPokemon’s lineup of Pokemon, it could be possible for very interesting conditions to take place involving a ghost boss that references the fight in Lavender Town’s Pokemon Tower. Listening to this boss music does suggest some tame spooky themes, so this seems to be far more likely than Mewtwo’s dramatic appearance.
Of course there isn’t any real way to figure out what was going to be in this scrapped content other than the music, but fans will keep speculating on what was never meant to be.
