The Witch Queenexpansion is setting the stage for another year of seasonal content for players to enjoy insideDestiny 2. The expansion is set to give players a brand-new six-player activity inside of Savathun’s Throne World, though the seasonal activity for Season of the Risen is not yet known. However, a new leak suggests Battlegrounds, the seasonal activity from one of 2021’s more popular seasons, will continue on whenThe Witch Queenand Season of the Risen release.

The Witch Queenis the fourth major expansion toDestiny 2and will see guardians do battle with Hive god of cunning, Savathun, who has become imbued with the Light. Guardians will need to venture into the queen’s Throne World to uncover how she stole the Light, defeat the queen and her light-powered Hive guardians of the Lucent Brood, and take back the Light. This battle will continue inside of Season of the Risen, which will see Zavala call on the aid of Cabal Empress Caiatl in the ongoing battles with the Lucent Brood.

The leak claims players will be getting new Battlegrounds maps whenThe Witch QueenandSeason of the Risenkick of on February 22. The alleged leak comes from Twitter user Liz -DestinyLeaks, who claims three new maps will be available to jump into. However, they provided no additional information about what these new Battlegrounds may entail.

Battlegrounds were first introduced insideSeason of the Chosen, where guardians first met Empress Caiatl when her people were forced to flee their homeworld due to a Hive invastion. The seasonal activity threw three matchmade players into one of four spaces across Nessus, the Cosmodrome, and Europa to halt the Cabal’s war efforts. It was one of the more popular seasonal modes, as well, due to the overall chaotic combat and higher enemy density.

Given Season of the Risen will be Cabal-centric, it makes sense Bungie may be looking to Battlegrounds as an activity with some changes to fit narratively. This would mean trading the enemy Cabal for the Hive, reflecting the new alliance with Caiatl against Savathun’sLucent Broodand injecting some freshness into the activity.

If the alleged leak is true, it begs the question of if these new Battlegrounds will be a core focus of the new season or will simply be additional expansion content. If it is an additional activity insideThe Witch Queenalongside whatever Season of the Risen entails, it is an overall positive for players since they will have another grinding avenue right out of the gate.

Destiny 2is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
