The wait for official news about the most hyped graphics cards in many years is almost over, as Nvidia have finally announced a GeForce Special Event to take place at 9am Pacific Time on September 1. Although precise details of the event are thin on the ground, it is expected to include the announcement of the RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3080, theirrelease dates, and at least some new details of their specifications.
The official Nvidia Twitter account shared the news of the Nvidia GeForce Special Event, stating that it would feature the “latest innovations in gaming and graphics” from the company, and be hosted by its CEO, Jensen Huang. The link goes to a 21-day countdown clock, referred to as “The Ultimate Countdown,” and over those daysNvidiawill be on social media, celebrating the biggest breakthroughs in PC gaming over the 21 years since the first ever GeForce card, the GeForce 256 launched.

The wording of the reveal suggests that Nvidia will be sharing plenty of information and footage from its latest breakthrough cards, the Ampere based GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3080, as well as the more affordable RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 cards, though the names have yet to be confirmed. As may be expected, gamers are reacting to the news with a mixture of delight and worries about high launch prices, with a few even hoping for a very unlikelyreveal of a new Tegra chip set for Nintendo Switch 2.
Although the newPlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles will be using AMD’s Navi 2Xbased graphics chips, the Nvidia event will still provide one of the first chances for gamers to truly see what the next generation of hardware will be capable of. With both AMD and Nvidia putting a major focus on ray tracing performance in its new cards, the visual advances are likely to closely mirror what the new consoles will bring to the table, particularly when it comes to lighting.
Given the hype and anticipation around the GeForce RTX 3080 and the rest of the range, it is incredibly unlikely that gamers will come away from the event without plenty of information about the upcoming Ampere based line-up. With the RTX 3080 Ti (or RTX 3090 if Nvidia look at alternate naming options) due to be themost powerful consumer oriented graphics cardin the world, gamers can expect Nvidia to enjoy taking the opportunity to show graphics on a level most have never seen before.
If the RTX 30 Series can match leaked benchmarks showing a 50% performance improvement over the current generation of graphics cards,AMD is going to have a very tough act to followlater in the year, when it is expected to reveal “Big Navi” and its other Navi 2X based cards.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3080 are expected to launch September 17.
