Summary
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare now filled with tons of fan favorites from earlier generations. Although there are still hundreds missing from the Pokedex in Gen 9,Scarlet and Violet’s Teal Mask and Indigo Disk DLC added so many Pokemon that have provided much-needed diversity to the competitive metagame. Although staples such as Incineroar and Porygon2 are already seeing a lot of usage, there are still a plethora of Pokemon that haven’t yet been explored, despite their potential in Regulation F.
As every single starter Pokemon and tons of Legendaries have returned, the competitive meta has never been more diverse inPokemon Scarlet and Violet. As such, certain Pokemon will inevitably be overlooked, despite their viability. It’s important to consider anti-meta picks when building a team, as it allows trainers to catch their opponents off-guard and create more specific strategies.
The Return Of The Powerful Rock-Type Move, Meteor Beam
The Teal Mask and Indigo Disk DLCsdidn’t just allow older Pokemon to be transferred, they also brought back moves that were first added toSword and Shield’s downloadable content. One of these moves is Meteor Beam, a 120-base power Special Rock-type move. It’s 90% accurate, however, and only attacks on the turn after using it. Yet, the Power Herb held item can allow Pokemon to use it in one turn, most notably on Lunala and Nihilego in Gen 8. Furthermore, there’s a Gen 9 Pokemon that is the ideal user of this attack.
Meteor Beam’s Best User, Glimmora
Glimmora is a Rock and Poison-type Pokemon with a massive 130-base Special Attack. It’s most commonly known as apartner to Dondozo and Tatsugiri, as its Toxic Debris Ability sets up Toxic Spikes on the opponents' side of the field if it is hit by a physical move. This allows Dondozo, especially when its defensive stats are boosted, to stall out opponents more effectively. Since the Indigo Disk DLC, however, Glimmora has found a new role for itself.
This set allows for Glimmora to fully take advantage of its offensive capabilities. The combination of Meteor Beam and Power Herb allows it to use the 120 base power move in one turn, and can easily pick up one-hit knockouts, especially onPokemon like Incineroar. Earth Power provides necessary Ground-type coverage to deal with threats such as Raging Bolt and Archaludon. Sludge Bomb takes care of its other STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) attack, as a 90 base power move that also has a chance to poison opponents. Finally, a Grass Tera Type provides defensive security for Glimmora, as Ground and Water-type attacks no longer become super effective.
Gen 9’s New Moves
Scarlet and Violetintroduced a lot of movesthat both old and new Pokemon can make good use of. Shed Tail is a unique move, which allows the user to make a Substitute and pass it on to a partner Pokemon in the back, which is defensively incredible. The only Pokemon that have made productive use of this move are Cyclizar and Orthworm, but a certain Grass-type starter recently got access to this move in the Indigo Disk DLC.
Sceptile’s Newfound Access To Unique Support Moves
Sceptile was given niche moves in Gen 9, including Shed Tail. The Gen 3 starter Pokemon is a Special Attacking Grass-type, a rarityin Regulation F’s competitive meta, allowing it to utilize a moveset that’s a hybrid of offensive and defensive moves.
This set allows Sceptile to fulfill a diverse, yet niche role in Regulation F. Shed Tail, coming from a 120-base Speed Pokemon is amazing as a pivoting move, and gives partners defensive security. Upper Hand is another move introduced in the Indigo Disk DLC and helps trainers deal with the onslaught of priority attacks that are prominent in the meta. The Fighting-type move allows Sceptile to protect itself and its teammates from priority attacks such as Extreme Speed and Fake Out, while also causing the opponent to flinch. Leaf Storm’s 130-base power allows the Pokemon to instantly knock out notable threats such as Rapid-Strike Urshifu. Lastly, aGrass Tera Typeis ideal for simply dealing as much damage as possible, as a defensive adjustment might not be enough to save Sceptile due to its weak defensive stats.
