In the originalPokemon Red,Blue, andGreen, the Ghost-type Elite Four trainer Agatha talks aboutfan-favorite character Professor Oakbeing a “tough and handsome” trainer before shifting his focus to study Pokemon. Now the original Professor is preparing to show off his battle prowess as a new sync pair in the mobile spin-off gamePokemon Masterson Valentine’s Day.
The official English Pokemon YouTube account released a teaser trailer for Professor Oak’s appearance today where Oak says that “after all this time absorbed in my research, it’s time to relive the old days a little.” He will be the second Professor introduced intoPokemon Mastersafter the Alola Region’s Kukui came with a midday-form Lycanroc to help players complete a Legendary Pokemon event starring Zinnia and Rayquaza.

There is no indication what Pokemon partner Oak will have, but the full range of Kanto starters are still available consideringhis grandson Blue joined with a PidgeotandPokemon FireRedandLeafGreenfemale protagonist Leaf joined with an Eevee. Blastoise or Venusaur seem the most likely ifPokemon Mastersdeveloper DeNA reserves Charizard to be used by Galar Champion Leon, but fans will have to wait until February 14 to see.
Oak is one of many fan-favorite characters who have been introduced intoMastersover the last few weeks as the game revamps itself based on early feedback.Sinnoh Champion Cynthia and Johto Champion Lancewere recent additions, and Hoenn Champion Steven with his signature Metagross is set to join them just a day before Oak.
The mobile game also announced a fan art contest today that will last until June 24, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. PST. For the chance to win 15,100 gems (an in-game currency that would allow for players to summon 50 characters), interested artists can submit original artwork featuring an available sync pair with proof of its current creation — unfortunately, that means notype-swapped Galar starter Pokemon.
Professor Oak has easily had the most in-game appearances of all the researchers in the Pokemon world, being a major character in the Kanto and Johto regions as well as havinga cousin who appeared inPokemon SunandMoon. Trainers will have to wait and see whether that acclaim will make him a worthy addition toMaster’s real-time, three-on-three battle style.
