Summary
APokemonfan, inspired by the theatrical release ofBarbie, drew some fan art that turned Mattel’s star doll into “Pokemon Trainer Barbie” and included a team of six Pokemon that she would take with her into battle. The artist then posted their work for otherPokemonfans to see and received praise for their timing and for the choices they made for Barbie’s Pokemon team.
Originally released by Mattel in 1959, the Barbie doll line has been a mainstay in popular culture for decades. Over six decades later,Barbie’s live-action premiere stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll, with Ryan Gosling taking the role of her longtime friend Ken. However,Barbiewill face stiff competition fromOppenheimerat the box office, with social media embracing the films' juxtaposition with one another. WhileOppenheimerhas a grim tone,Barbieserves to be a brighter comic foil, with the color pink as the most dominant part of Barbie’s brand. This signature color tone is what inspired onePokemonfan artist to make a Pokemon team around it.

On Reddit, a user named Dodominart posted a digital drawing of Barbie surrounded by a team of six Pokemon. The artist designed Barbie with her blonde hair down and gave her a pink plaid dress, high heels, and a necklace made from flowers. The OP gave her a Pokemon team consisting of Jigglypuff, Furret, Buneary, Sylveon, Alcremie, and Tinkaton. With the colors pink and brown being the most dominant among Barbie’s Pokemon team, so are the types of Normal and Fairy. The only Pokemon that had dual types are Jigglypuff, which is both Normal and Fairy, andthe Fairy and Steel dual-type Tinkaton.
As for the battle capability of Barbie’s team, her strongest Pokemon would be Tinkaton and Sylveon, which respectively have base stat totals of 506 and 525 and are amongthe top Fairy-type PokemoninPokemon Scarlet and Violet. But given the fact that Barbie’s team is dominated by two Pokemon types, any number of Poison, Steel, and Fighting-type Pokemon would make short work of Barbie’s squad. Nevertheless, the post from Dodominart received 1.5k upvotes on the r/pokemon subreddit. Other Redditors praised the OP for their Pokemon choices, while some included other suggestions such as Milotic, Ditto, and a Shiny Mega Garchomp to balance out the Normal and Fairy-type dominance on Barbie’s team.
While otherplatforms such as Xbox have crossed over with Barbiein an official capacity,Pokemonfans such as Dodominart have taken it upon themselves to make Barbie into a Pokemon trainer in her own right. It remains to be seen what other fan projects will come about as Barbie hits the silver screen.
