For over a decade, each newCall of Dutyentry has brought with it some kind of additional mode. Beginning withCall of Duty: World at Warand its iconic Zombies mode, these additional game modes can get pretty experimental, withCall of Duty: Ghosts' alien-centric Extinction modebeing a prime example. This year, however, Infinity Ward has decided to take fans back to basics, putting a Spec Ops mode inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but it’s a little different from how fans may remember it.

Debuting in 2009’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Spec Ops was originally a set of missions with varying objectives, all of which were based on scenarios from the game’s campaign. WhileModern Warfare 2shipped with 23 individual Spec Ops missions, only a few have stood the test of time, and it’s those few that should be reimagined in 2022’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, though they may need to undergo a few changes to fit with the title’s new style of co-op gameplay.

Classic Spec Ops Missions That Should Be Remade In Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops mode is quite different from its 2009 predecessor’s. While 2009’s Spec Ops allowed for co-op in some of its missions, 2022’s mode makes it the primary focus. Currently, there are justthree Spec Ops missions inModern Warfare 2, with more to come in future updates, but these missions are far more expansive than any offerings in the 2009 game. Maps are bigger, the mission objectives are more varied and complex, and the actual gameplay mechanics have been improved and expanded on significantly, but that doesn’t mean classic Spec Ops missions couldn’t get a remake in this engine.

One of the most fondly remembered Spec Ops missions from 2009’sModern Warfare 2is “Overwatch.” Putting one player in the gunner’s seat of an AC-130 Gunship, and putting the other player on the ground, tasked with reaching the objective against all odds, “Overwatch” is one of the most riveting Spec Ops missions in the original game, and the two different perspectives added quite a bit of replayability. This gameplay could be translated seamlessly toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with players already getting a taste of it duringthe campaign mission “Close Air.”

One classic Spec Ops mission that could make great use ofModern Warfare 2’s new mechanics is “Hidden.” Taking players back to Chernobyl, “Hidden” is essentially a shortened version ofCall of Duty 4’s “All Ghillied Up” mission, where players are tasked with sneaking through fields and silently taking down guards to reach an objective. A modern version of “Hidden” could make use ofModern Warfare 2’s crafting mechanics, which are briefly showcased in the campaign mission “Alone.” Players could start with no equipment, and have to craft weapons and resources to escape Chornobyl, looting better weapons along the way, and being encouraged to use stealth effectively.

A slightly more underrated Spec Ops mission, “Race,” would make for an excellent addition toModern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops mode. AsMW2’s Spec Ops mode has focused primarily on expansive, open-ended experiences, it would be great to see a smaller-scale, shorter mission in its line-up. “Race” provides the perfect backbone for this, tasking players with simply racing each other in snowmobiles to the finish line. This mission would be short and sweet, and would add a nice bit of competitive action to this otherwise strictly cooperative mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
