Upon release into its alpha stage back in 2009, developer Markus “Notch” Persson, and the surrounding community, likely had no idea just how much of a gaming juggernautMinecraftwould become. Thanks largely to its open-ended creative aspects, in which fans have built everything from houses toa fully-functionalTetrisgame in the blocky world, the game continues to be one of the biggest titles to ever be released, essentially being a massive digital version of LEGO. Speaking of LEGO, one modder has managed to bring things around full circle by unveiling a texture pack which turns the game into its brick-building ancestor.
Developed by Macio6 Productions, the texture pack, known asMineBricks, has been in development for a few months now, and basically transformsMinecraftinto the Danish-born toy, containing all the usual LEGO bricks which come complete with the studs on top for maximum accuracy. Currently, this is version five of the mod, with version six currently being worked on. There’s also a video that’s been posted which shows off the texture pack in all its glorious HD and potentially nostalgia-inducing glory.

Macio6 first spoke about creating the LEGO texture pack back in February. Even before it was released, a teaser showed just how much work was being put into it, and the result is a stupendous blend ofMinecraftopen world creativity, and the famous toy bricks. Each version ofMineBricksis available for free on the developer’s website, though there are options to pay from two to five dollars for higher resolution versions, as well as some extra bits not loaded with the free files.
Given thatMinecrafthas been out for so long now, it’s surprising that someone else hasn’t already thought of doing a similar texture pack or mod before. Of course, LEGO itself has put out its own equivalent of digital brick building games. In 2017, Warner Bros. publishedthe sandbox gameLEGO Worlds,which received generally positive reviews. Earlier this year, the LEGO group itself releasedLEGO Builder’s Journey, which also got good scores.
Minecraftalready has near-infinite replayability, with the studio continuing to put out extra content, and fans finding new ways to play and new things to create. What Macio6 Productions has done is brought the digital world ofMinecraftand the real world of LEGO bricks together as one. Fans ofMineBrickswill no doubt be looking forward to what the modder has in store for version six of the texture pack.
