Free-to-play fighting gameMultiVersusis currently available in Open Beta. And while it certainly has its share of issues to fix,MultiVersus' soft launch has proven to be a striking success. Unsurprisingly, many players are already looking toMultiVersus' future and asking what content and features could be added soon. One major request forMultiVersusis the addition of a replay system, so matches can be re-watched or shared. The good news is that developer Player First Games is planning on replays, but there’s a catch. In a message shared on Twitter byMultiVersusgame director Tony Huynh, the Player First Games co-founder confirms that a replay system is on the game’s development roadmap. In other words, the team plans to add a replay system in the future, but it’s not necessarily anytime soon. It may not even have been started, yet. Huynh elaborates on this, saying that “it might be some time” before Player First is able to add replays toMultiVersus.RELATED:MultiVersus Fan Mods the Game to Add Link From Super Smash Bros. While it isn’t explicitly stated, major features like replays are often evaluated to judge whether they can be completed well before a game’s launch. If a system like replays is judged to be beyond the scope of what the development team can reasonably accomplish in the time it has, it’s pushed into the nebulous future.Player First Gameswould almost certainly love to add replays and may have even builtMultiVersusaround the idea of adding replays later. But its priority right now is finishing and polishingMultiVersusas it stands in preparation for full launch.
Even afterMultiVersuslaunches fully, that doesn’t necessarily mean replays are going to be added to the game. At that point, Player First will have to once again evaluate whether it has the time and resources, now dependent on the game’s success, to add such major features. MaybeMultiVersuswas initially successful but couldn’t retain players. Maybe publisher Warner Bros. Games pulls anOverwatchand wants a sequel instead of funding the expansion of the first game.
The idea is thatMultiVersus' future is currently up in the air. A lot can change between now andSeason 1’s launch on August 9. More can change between Season 1 andMultiVersus' full launch later this year. If players truly want a replay system, they have to keep asking for it. Further, they need to continue supportingMultiVersus.
It’s still a very good sign that the game director forMultiVersusis willing to openly state that Player First wants to add replays to the game. It sets an expectation in the public eye, which drives the developer to want to follow through. Just don’t expect Player First to follow through anytime soon.MultiVersusplayerswill have to get used to a game without replays for the foreseeable future.
MultiVersusis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
