The beta for Activision and Infinity Ward’s upcoming multiplayer-centric first-person shooterCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2has now come and gone, and plenty of players were eager to voice their frustrations with certain aspects of the experience. In particular, this build ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2seemed to punish player movementmuch too severely, leading to rampant camping. However, one player seems to have been a bit overzealous with these accusations, as a viral Reddit clip catches them calling their attacker a camper after being outmaneuvered in a Domination match.

A Reddit post submitted by EaterOfFungus showcases a clip in which a player spawns in, rushes around a corner, guns down an opponent trying to cap a flag, and is promptly accused of camping as they move in to undo the capture progress. TheCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2beta may have heavily favored players who didn’t rush objectives often, but this was a genuine example of a player defying the stagnant norm only to be berated all the same.

Hilariously enough, this wasn’t even a case of inordinate griefing familiar to the franchise and its community. The response was a curt “imagine camping in the beta.” There’s technically some truth to that; progress made in the beta won’t carry over to the official release, so things like unlocks and stats held no bearing. Still, given the controversial changes made to the game’s minimap, the elephantine footsteps of enemy players, and theunhelpful amendments made to the Dead Silence perk, camping did seem to be encouraged inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer beta, and the player did have a right to be upset in all but that specific instance.

This humorous occurrence also inadvertently strikes at the core of another issue fans have with modernCall of Dutyinstallments. While it’s been a part of the franchise’s multiplayer components to some degree for quite some time, theskill-based matchmaking systems employed inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2seem to be pretty egregious, and it often turns what would otherwise be fairly casual matches into no-holds-barred slogfests in which players need to give their all. Perhaps this poor player had just been in a match plagued by high-skill players who camped to maintain a low profile and was at their breaking point.

Of course, that’s almost certainly an over-analysis of the situation. With a fanbase so notoriouslytoxic that Activision claims to have banned half a million playersfrom its servers, grief like this, warranted or not, isn’t uncommon and is probably better off ignored.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
