Netflix’sStranger Things, the Duffer brothers’ ode to everything 1980s, Stephen King (and with quite a few winks at John Carpenter) has covered everything from Dungeons and Dragons (no duh) andE.T.references to malls and Reagan, to the waning days of the Cold War and heavy metal. Eddie Munson, the late great ayatollah of rock’n’rolla—if he were described by the emcee inThe Road Warrior—took on the beasties of the Upside Down by blasting out Metallica.

Now Joseph Quinn, the man behind the Muns, has made that real, taking the practice he put into the song “Master of Puppets” from the 1986 album of the same name by Metallica, getting to jam out with the group at Lollapalooza 2022. Their performance featured footage from the final episode of the fourth season, featuring Eddie’s deadly good guitar licks.

Dustin Henderson’s second male influence (after Steve Harrington), poor soon-to-be-dead Eddie got eaten by the demobats from thenether realm of the Upside Downproviding a distraction while the rest of the gang tried to sneak into Vecna’s mansion. The school outcast, played with aplomb by Brit actor, Joseph Quinn, got to jam out with Metallic themselves as shown in footage from Netflix’s own Twitter account showing a behind-the-scenes look.

Quinn sits down with the entire group backstage at Lollapalooza ’22, getting to sit down with James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo. Hetfield comments that Quinn is, “Taller than on the TV,” before telling Quinn he’s a big fan of the show, has been since season one, and that it’s allowed him and his own kids to bond more—presumably with their dad being able to give insight into the decade in which he and his bandmates rose to prominence. Quinn thanks them for letting the series use the track and Hetfield thanks him for doing it justice.

They Invite Quinn back for jam session and they all play “Master of Puppets” with Lars Ulrich joking thatMetallicais now a five-piece. The band then gifts Quinn witha replica of his Eddie Munson guitar, sign it, and then rock out to footage of Eddie doing his thang to help save the day in the finale ofStranger Thingsseason 4. Not bad as far as a meeting of the minds goes, with fans meeting fans and artists meeting artists. As Dustin himself yelled, “Most. Metal. Ever!!!”
