Summary

In late 2021,Marvel’s Wolverinewas revealed to the world. The upcoming game is set to be made byMarvel’s Spider-Mandeveloper Insomniac Games. Aside from the fact thatMarvel’s Wolverinewill be mature in tone, there is very little that is currently known about it. There is one story that the upcoming game should embrace in some kind of spinoff.

Since the character first appeared in the 1970s, Wolverine has been in more comics than can be counted. He is primarily featured as a key member of the X-Men and is by far the team’s best-known and most popular character. The character has also appeared in several solo comic book series of varying quality and there areseveral stories thatMarvel’s Wolverinecould draw from. The best-known of these solo adventures is the 2008 story,Old Man Logan.

What Is Old Man Logan?

Old Man Loganis a single arc that was part of a much larger Wolverine solo series. Written by Mark Millar, the story took place in a Post-Apocalyptic setting where all the Marvel Universe’s heroes were wiped out by a massive alliance of supervillains. Only a handful survived the slaughter, and the villains then turned on each other before dividing up the world among themselves. The story itself followed Wolverine, who swore off violence as he makes a road trip across the United States in order to make some money to pay off his supervillain landlord.

While a relatively new comic,Old Man Loganhas had a lot of cultural staying power over the character. This version of Wolverine had his own series in the main Marvel universe and effectively replaced the younger version who had died in a miniseries a few years prior. The storyline also served as the inspiration for the2017 filmLoganwhich was largely considered a great sendoff for the character. A video game adaptation would be the next logical step for the story.

How Marvel’s Wolverine Can Incorporate the Old Man Logan Storyline

It’s been argued in the past thatMarvel’s Wolverinehas a similar vibe toOld Man Logan. While certain tones may be similar, it’s far more likely that the upcoming game will follow a younger version of the character with familiar foes. As theMarvel’s Spider-Mangames have proven, the developer is good at taking older comic book ideas and providing a good new twist on them. That does not mean that a fullOld Man Loganstory couldn’t appear elsewhere.

Insomniac Games has proven to be very good at DLC and spinoff titles for its games as well. The City That Never SleepsDLCwas praised by gamers and critics for its rich story content. While some might question making it a full game instead of DLC, Spider-Man: Miles Moralesalso was a game that clicked with fans with its story and characters. TurningOld Man Loganinto DLC or its own smaller spinoff game would not be an unreasonable path for the developer to follow. It would allow Insomniac to continue Wolverine’s story in whatever manner it deems appropriate while also giving the modern classic some more time in the spotlight.

Unfortunately very little is known aboutMarvel’s Wolverineat this stage. While the creative team has slowly been coming together, it is likely that fans won’t hear more about the game for some time. OnceMarvel’s Spider-Man 2is released, it’s probable that the game will enter full development and news will begin to trickle out.Old Man Loganmay not be a good story for the base game but could make a perfect adventure for some kind of spinoff.
