Paper Mario: The Origami Kingis home to many activities aside from the main quest of defeating King Ollie. One of these activities is cooking on the barbecue in Whispering Woods, but to do this, players will need to have the ability to use the fire Magic Circles hidden around the folded world.
Many open-world elements can be seen inPaper Mario: The Origami King.The game’s development team outlined a number ofopen-world features that would appear inPaper Marioprior to its release. In addition to collectible items and having the ability to explore each region limitlessly, Mario is able to go fishing now, a largely popular activity seen in open-world AAA games. Through fishing, a number of cookable items will become available, but before this is possible, players will have to check a few boxes.

Prior to encountering the first office-supplies themed boss, thedreaded Colored Pencils, players might notice a firepit within the whispering woods. They’ll be prompted with the question of how to light it, and will soon realize, especially if they tried using a fire flower, that this is not yet possible. To light a fire, players will first have to beat the Fire Vellumental boss.
While theEarth Vellumental is the very first bossMario will have to combat inOrigami King, the Fire Vellumental won’t appear until about halfway through, meaning players will have to wait a little while before they get the ability to grill some goodies. Within the cave, a number of tactics can be used to beat the beast, such as using previously gained Water Vellumental powers and attacking with the iron boots when the boss is enflamed. Once players conquer it, Mario will be rewarded with a couple thousand coins as well as the Fire Bibliofold, which allows the hero to use fire Magic Circles.
Return back to the Whispering Woods—the easiest way is to head back to Toad Town and backtrack through its entrance—and visit the fire pit. Light the fire of wood next to the BBQ that so kindly tells Mario they’re prepared to be burned. A number of items will now be cookable on the grill. And make sure to look out for a special shell from the ocean during Mario’s travels; cook it over the fire pit to reveal a secret.
Cooking isn’t a brand new concept to thePaper Marioseries. It was seen back inThousand-Year Doordays, where recipes could be made with the help of the trusty Mushroom Person, Zess T. Just like inOrigami King, many recipes could be crafted that would aid Mario such as by replenishing his health points or inflicting damage upon enemies.
