Summary
The creators ofGame of Throneshave finally broken their silence on their abandonedStar Warsproject, and it seems they won’t be making their way to the galaxy far, far away anytime soon.
David Benioff and DB Weiss took the world by storm with the HBO seriesGame of Thrones. It is one of the highest-rated series of all time and won several accolades. After the massive success of the show, Lucasfilm tapped the creators to create a trilogy of films in theStar Warsuniverse. However, in 2019, they pulled out of the franchise and started their journey with Netflix. A lot has been said about their exit and the reasons behind it. However, the duo recently opened up about the abandoned projects and quashed all the rumors about their exit.

Speaking in an interview withInside Total Film podcast and GameRadar+, Benioff and Weiss revealed that they wanted to start something fresh and withStar Warsbeing “well established,” it didn’t give them the freedom to tackle the projects like they would have wanted to. Benioff said, “I think when you’ve got a franchise that’s already so well established, likeStar WarsorJames Bondor so forth, I think there’s less independence when you come in to attempt to tell a story that you want to tell and so I think what Dan [Weiss] and I have learned is that it’s more fun for us to start something afresh.”
The comments made by the duo came almost three months after they noted how creative differences with Lucasfilm led to the cancellation of the trilogy of films. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the duo suggested that they wanted to makeThe Last Jediandgot really annoyed when Rian Johnson’s 2017 film was titledThe Last Jedi. Johnson’s movie turned out to be successful at the box office, and it was believed that fans would finally be getting the trilogy they deserved. However, the trilogy never happened. In 2012, there were rumors that Lucasfilm had canceled the planned trilogy. But it is important to realize thatJohnson and Kathleen Kennedy have never officially stated that the trilogy has officially been scrapped. The duo has always maintained that they are still discussing the possibility of more films.
Presently, Lucasfilm is immersed in the development of numerous exciting Star Wars ventures, notably the eagerly awaited productions such asThe MandalorianandGrogumovie. Additionally, there’s a buzz surrounding an untitled film starring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey, rumored to revolve around her endeavor to reestablish the Jedi Order. Meanwhile, Benioff and Weiss are currently busy promoting their new Netflix series3 Body Problem. Based on the novel of the same name, the Netflix show has opened to positive reviews. This is their first project after signing their $200 million deal with the streaming platform. The duo has been praised for making the novel that was long considered to be unadaptable. This might encourage Kennedy and other decision-makers at Lucasfilm to consider Benioff and Weiss for otherStar Warsprojects.
