After more than three and a half decades,Doomis still showing the world how to make incredible first-person shooters. Along with such other highly praised titles asHalf-Life,Quake, andGoldenEye 007, id Software’s original 1993 release has gone down asone of the most influential FPS games of all time. The reboot from a few years ago has renewed great interest in the franchise, but what hit the shelves and digital storefronts back in 2016 was almost not what fans were going to get.
Many are perhaps already aware that there was a fourthDoomgame in development. However, the project was scrapped, and the team began reworking the project into what would become the reboot that players know and love. Now, some footage from the canceledDoom 4has been unearthed, and has been shown off by the YouTube channel NoClip. The video shows a number of aspects from the game’s early development, which includes some play footage, animations, and tech demos, such as lighting effects and depth of field.

There are also a few early portrayals of some of the “glory kills” that would be reworked for the reboot. While generally this scrapped game would have more of aCall of Dutyvibe about it, many will still see elements that would survive and make it into the 2016 release, such as the animation which shows what would have been the opening cut-scene.
NoClip specializes in video game documentaries and behind-the-scenes footage. Recently, the team was able to show off ademonstration from the cancelled “Ravenholm"Half-Lifeproject, which was being developed by Arkane Studios.
As well as this latest video, someimages from the called offDoom 4emerged a few months ago, showing some of the Resistance soldier character models. There was also some more footage which was doing the rounds at the end of 2020. This video, similar to the one NoClip has shown, gave an insight into the early aspects of the game, such as monster animations and some of the visuals that would have been.
Withid Software now said to be working on a new game, many will be keeping a close on updates to see whether a newDoomentry is imminent. Most will agree that the reboot, as well as theDoom Eternalfollow-up, have successfully helped keep the series in the gaming limelight. But many will also wonder what things would have been like hadDoom 4been fully realized.
