Fallout Shelteris a cross-platform game based on theFalloutfranchise. Released in 2015, it is available to play for free. Initially perceived as a novelty, the game was more of a marketing tool forFallout 4than a comprehensive gaming experience. However, it has evolved over the years into alive service gamewith a substantial and dedicated fan base.
An integral aspect of gameplay inFallout Shelterinvolves sending dwellers out to explorewasteland locations. Before dispatching them, dwellers must be leveled up and equipped with suitable gear, and the gear the player equips a dweller with includes a suitable outfit.There are a number of outfits in the game that suit wasteland exploration and questing better than others.
Updated on July 01, 2025, by Mac Wheeler:There have been a handful of updates to Fallout Shelter. As part of these updates, some additional items were added to the game, and this includes some useful outfits for wasteland exploration. The best of these have been added to the ranking.
Solid Ranged Damage Armor
The T-45f Power Armor is one of a series of power armors with the T-45 designation. Each of these is subtly different, with slightly different stats. However, the T-45f variant is the best of the bunch. This is not the kind of armor that a player would want to equip on a vault dweller that has low innate endurance, as it has no endurance bonus baked in.
However, for vault dwellers with good endurance, the T-45f Power Armor adds a whopping 5 perception. This means that it is perfect for equipping alongside a high-damage ranged weapon. But its main benefit in wasteland exploration is that high perception means finding more loot.
And Upgrade Over The T-45f Power Armor
As with the T-45f Power Armor above, the T-60f Power Armor is the best of the power armors with the T-60 designation. It has exactly the same crafting requirements as the T-45f, so it should be prioritized for crafting over the lesser armor., but only if it is intended for use to equip a vault dweller that already has high innate perceptions.
The T-60f Power Armor adds a lot of survivability to a vault dweller that doesn’t have very much endurance. The +5 to this stat adds a lot of health points. It has additional benefits for wasteland exploration though. High endurance means finding more legendary junk, and it also adds some radiation mitigation as well. Overall, the T-60f Power Armor makes a great outfit for vault dwellers who are heading out into the wasteland to explore, although there are better options.
Added In A Recent Update
Wilzig’s Travelwear is one of the newer outfits available to players in Fallout Shelter. It was added as part of the 1.18.0 update. It is an interesting outfit and could be great for wasteland exploration but with a caveat. It will need to be used by a vault dweller who already has a fair bit of endurance, simply to make sure they survive their adventures.
What makes Wilzig’s Travelwear is firstly, the fact it adds 4 perception, which gives the dweller more chance of discovering loot while exploring. And secondly, the +4 luck, which increases the chance of a dweller finding legendary junk and bottle caps. For the right vault dweller, Wilzig’s Travelwear could be an excellent outfit, turning them into a loot monster while exploring the wasteland in Fallout Shelter.
The Fallout Shelter Hazmat Suit
Crafting requirements:
The best thing about usingHeavy Wasteland Gearto equip vault dwellers who are heading out into the wasteland is that it completely negates damage from radiation. In effect, that makes this a hazmat suit that can be used by both male and female vault dwellers.
With the +7 Endurance bonus, a fully leveled-up vault dweller with their Endurancestat trained to 10will have the maximum amount of health possible. This is an excellent outfit to make sure that a dweller has the highest possible survivability when exploring the wasteland. As long as thedweller is happywhen sent out to the wasteland, they will have a good chance of surviving.
5War’s Armor
Great For The Stat Boosts
War’s Armoris a Power Armor suit that provides a vault dweller with some solid stat boosts when equipped. For general use,sending a dweller into the wasteland, and for quests, the combination of Strength and Perception boosting damage, and Endurance boosting survivability, is just about perfect.
War’s Armor is one of the possible quest rewards from the “Horsemen of the Post-Apocalypse” questline, so whether the player has access to this armor or not comes down to the RNG roll on quest completion. However, if players are lucky enough to get this outfit as a reward, it will become a solid part of their vault dweller loadout for exploration in the wasteland, and for battlingwasteland creatures.
4Pestilence’s Plating
An Alternative To War’s Armor
Pestilence’s Platingis another one of the armor sets inFallout Shelterthat is given as a quest reward for completing the “Horsemen of the Post-Apocalypse” series of quests. War’s Armor was covered in the previous section, and Pestilence’s Plating is another solid outfit option. Its stat boosts are more suited to wasteland exploration when the player wants to ensure the vault dweller has the best chance of survival.
This is also an excellent armor set for leveling up vault dwellers out in the wasteland, due to its bonus to Intelligence. This means the dweller will receive more EXP for every type of action they perform while out exploring.
3Detective Outfit
Great For Wasteland Exploration
Oddly, theDetective Outfitis a great piece of equipment to use for wasteland exploration inFallout Shelter. Rather than boosting stats related to combat and survivability, the Detective Outfit boosts stats that help a vault dweller avoid some encounters altogether, and achieve better outcomes in some activities.
With Luck and Intelligence boosted, this outfit is great for improving loot drop chance, and ensuring that the vault dweller is getting the maximum number of experience points possible when completing actions out in the wasteland. The extra Endurance is useful too, as it lowers the amount of damage a dweller takes from radiation. Overall, this is a solid wasteland exploration outfit that players can get lots of value out of.
Craftable With Damage Bonuses
TheMutant Hunter Geartakes second place on this list, even though it doesn’t have as good stat bonuses as some of the previous entries. However, what makes the Mutant Hunter Gear a really good outfit, is the fact it is easy to craft and available very early in the game.
As a basic outfit to be used in early-game wasteland exploration, this is going to be the go-to choice for most players ofFallout Shelter. Later in the game, the player will gain access to more advanced outfits, but until then, the Mutant Hunter Gear is a fantastic option.
Fantastic Mid-Game Craftable Outfit
TheX-01 Mk VI PAoutfit can be crafted byFallout Shelterplayers. It doesn’t have as good of stats as some of the quest reward outfits, but the fact that it’s easy to craft and available long before the player will gain access to the advanced outfits is why it takes the top spot on this list. For general exploration andfighting creatures, it offers the game’s best value.
With its respectable boosts to damage output and survivability, this is the outfit that most players will be using to level up their vault dwellers out in the wasteland. Yes, there are better outfits on paper, but none of them can be crafted in bulk and used to outfit whole teams of vault dwellers for exploration.
