Summary
The post-launch support forFallout 76has seen the introduction of several new Vaults, as well as the removal of a few Vaults over time. Even now, almost 6 years after the game’s release,Fallout 76updates throughout 2024and beyond are likely to add more Vaults to the game in future updates.
As it currently stands, there are sevenseparate Vaults inFallout 76, including a training Vault located in Appalachia’s Vault-Tec University. Most of these Vaults have some rather tame objectives, while others are home to some of the most sinister Vault-Tec experiments in theFalloutgames’ universe.
S-Tier
Vault 76
The Vault where players begin their journey inFallout 76is one of the fewControl-Vaults in theFalloutfranchisethat didn’t secretly subject its residents to an unethical experiment. Additionally, Vault 76 is also one of the few Vaults that fulfills its purpose of preserving the bright minds that would help to rebuild America in the aftermath of the Great War.
Vault 79
Vault 79 is Vault-Tec’s secret stash of Gold Bullion. With the help of one of the local factions, players eventually break into this Vault inFallout 76’s main questline and reintroduce Gold Bullion into the local economy. Players can then use this endgame currency to purchase some of the best weapons and armor inFallout 76, like the Secret Service Armor, the T-65 Power Armor, and the Gauss energy weapons.
A-Tier
Vault 94
Vault 94 was originally part ofFallout 76’s Vault Raids, but it was reopened for exploration shortly after Vault Raids were cut from the game. This Vault was intended to preserve the local environment and provide aid to any post-war survivors. However, shortly after the Great War, a misguided attempt to destroy this Vault led to an explosion that consumed and transformed the surrounding region, now known as the “Mire.”
Vault 96
Similar to how Vault 94 was designed to preserve the local plant life, Vault 96 was designed to preserve the local wildlife. However, unlike Vault 94’s pure intentions, this Vault tasked its residents with conducting disturbing genetic experiments. Eventually, Vault 96 became a source ofthe Forced Evolutionary Virusthat creates Super Mutants in theFalloutfranchise universe.
B-Tier
Vault 51
This Vault was home toFallout 76’s Battle-Royale mode, Nuclear Winter, which has since been removed from the game. The Battle Royale was justified as the selection process to determine the Overseer of this Vault. Since Nuclear Winter was removed, Vault 51 has closed and can not currently be explored. As much as the community reminisces about the Nuclear Winter Battle Royale mode since its removal, it was apparently removed due to a lack of player support for PvP inFallout 76, so this game mode is unlikely to ever return.
Vault-Tec Training Vault
This Vault is for simulation and training purposes at the local Vault-Tec University. According to holotapes and terminals found within, this Vault was actively undergoing a simulation whenthe Great War of theFalloutgames’ timelineoccurred. Although the residents survived the nuclear apocalypse, a failed internal experiment led to a mutiny that resulted in all the residents dying before they ever left the Vault.
C-Tier
Vault 63
Allegedly, Vault 63 was intended to be the site for one ofFallout 76’s Vault Raids, but this game mode was cut fromFallout 76before Vault 63 was ever made accessible. Consequently, while this Vault can still be discovered inFallout 76, it has never been opened, so very little is known about its lore. However,Fallout 76’s upcoming map expansionhas been subtly hinting that this Vault will open in the near future, finally revealing its secrets, treasures, and/or horrors.
