White Mask Varréis the first NPC character that players come across inElden Ring, found right outside the Stranded Graveyard elevator that leads to thebeautiful first vistas of the Lands Between. He once told players to go die in a ditch somewhere, but now he is more well-known for calling players “maidenless” for the first time.
Varre’s intrigue doesn’t end at this initial meeting point, though. In fact, Varre is tied to one of the most powerful demigods inElden Ring, the Lord of Blood, and completing his questlines grants players the ability to have an audience withMohg, Lord of BloodinMohgwyn Palaceabove the Siofra River. He doesn’t move much, has simple requests, and is relatively easy to satisfy.
Updated July 19, 2025 by Erik Petrovich: In Elden Ring, the White Mask Varre quest eventually takes players to a hidden area hidden deep beneath the Lands Between. To complete the White Mask Varre quest, Elden Ring players must commit themselves to Mohg in a non-impactful way, invade other players (or NPCs), and bloody a cloth with the blood of a Finger Maide. To help players figure out how to finish the Elden Ring Varre questline, this guide has been updated with a video walkthrough detailing each of the many steps required to finish Varre’s quest.
Talk To White Mask Varre At The First Steps Site of Lost Grace
After the tutorial spirit and theGrafted Scion (Chapel of Anticipation),White Mask Varréis the first NPC players interact with in the game. Exhaust his dialogue at the beginning of the game to get some hazy background on him and your goals as a Tarnished – and to get insulted.
After defeatingMargit, the Fell Omen, he has new dialogue in this location at the First Steps Site of Lost Grace. Exhaust this, and return after beatingGodrick the Grafted. Re-load the area to haveVarre move to his next location- the Rose Church of Liurnia.
After Beating Godrick, He Moves To Liurnia’s Rose Church
If you visit his original location at the First Steps Site of Lost Grace after beating Godrick, a message can be found left by Varre leading you to the Rose Church - it even asks if the player is “maidenless” once more. Varre’s true intentions aren’t revealed until he moves to the Rose Church, which is most easily accessed by heading west of the Academy Gate Town.
He stands just outside the front entrance to the scarlet-laden church, and asks the player what their first impression was of the Two Fingers after getting the first Great Rune.
Say that something didn’t seem right, and he will reveal his perspective on the Shattering and its effect on the Greater Will and the Two Fingers. He says that he has a way to circumvent the influence of the Two Fingers. After giving the player several Festering Bloody Fingers, he strongly encourages players to hurry up and use them, perhaps to prove they don’t mind killing fellow tarnished like the Volcano Manor questline, or perhaps just to get a little extra blood for Mohg.
Complete Three Invasions After Agreeing To His Offer
To complete this stage of Varre’s questline, you only need to complete three invasions. Defeating the Host of Fingers isn’t a requirement, only that the Festering Bloody Fingers are used. Be sure that you don’t use Dueling summon signs or othermeans of invading or PvPas they don’t count towards this portion of the quest.
Return to Varre and he will reveal himself to be a servant of the Lord of Blood and offers induction into the Knights of Luminary Mohg. Respond “Annoint Me” and Varre will give you the Lord of Blood’s Favor. This item must be soaked in the blood of a dead maiden, but thankfully there areseveral options as to how to progressthis portion of the quest.
What About In Offline Play?
Elden Ringplayers who prefer to keep things offline, or who have poor internet connections for invading, have one other option to complete this part of Varre’s questline. If you wait to talk to Varre until after beginning the Volcano Manor questline, the red letters given to you by Tanith count as invasions towards this quest too. you’re able to also invade Magnus, the Beast Claw in the Writheblood Ruins of the Altus Plateau repeatedly, allowing you to reach the 3x requirement offline.
Just be sure not to kill Rykard before completing this part of Varre’s questline here, as it instantly causes the Volcano Manor questline to end, halting its progression entirely.
There are three places where a dead maiden can be found inElden Ring- at the very start of the game in the Chapel of Anticipation, in the Church of Inhibition, and by killing the NPC Hyetta. Of these three options, killing Hyetta is the least recommended as she has a questline that rewards players with a unique Frenzied Flame Seal. However, she is probably the easiest Maiden to harvest blood from, as she’s first met right next to the first Site of Lost Grace in Liurnia after clearing Stormveil Castle.
To find the dead maiden in the Church of Anticipation, head to the Four Belries in Liurnia and use an Imbued Stonesword Key on the portal labeled “Precipice of Anticipation”. The maiden is found on the ground in the chapel itself. The Church of Inhibition is located in the far northeast of Liurnia above the Frenzied Flame Village and a gigantic Flame of Frenzy causing madness to all in the area.Backtrack from the Dectus liftto find the entrance to this clifftop area on the eastern cliffs.
Get The Pureblood Knight’s Medal And Invade Varre In Mohgwyn
After soaking the Lord of Blood’s Favor in one of the three dead maidens' blood, return to Varre in the Rose Church. He will officially induct you into the Knights of Luminary Mohg by slicing off one of your own fingers. This becomes the Bloody Finger, a reusable invasion item that replaces the Festering Bloody Fingers that could only be used once.
He also gives the player the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, which teleports the user to the foot of Mohgwyn Palace.
Interestingly, this item can also be used to teleport away from imminent death, and works like a Homeward Bone in theDark Soulsgames - though instead of going to the last Site of Lost Grace, it always goes to Mohgwyn Palace.
Begin yourascension of the steps to Mohgwyn Palaceand you should see an invasion sign on the ground near a Site of Lost Grace after the large cave with the Sanguine Noble enemies. This allows you to invade Varre, who is angry that you chose violence despite being on the same side.
Defeat him here and you will receive the Varre’s Bouquet armament and complete the questline of perhaps the rudest NPC inElden Ring. There is no specific White Mask questElden Ringoffers players, but by heading into the nearby blood lake and fighting off three invaders, you can earn Varre’s signature headpiece too.
