Summary
Dragon’s Dogma 2has proven to be a successful entry in what is now Capcom’s flagship original fantasy RPG despite controversies regarding the game’s day-one DLC, and this now has players speculating on what more substantial additional content could look like in the future. With some players retreading their adventure as the Arisen in new game plus after already clearing most of what the game has to offer,Dragon’s Dogma 2is almost certain to eventually receive an expansion in a similar vein to the original’sDark Arisen.
The base game is a complete product that should take around 30-40 hours to get through, but players who have seen most of whatDD2has to offer have begun to discuss two distinct possibilities as to how future DLC could manifest. Unlike the quality-of-life-basedmicrotransactions that definedDragon’s Dogma 2’s launch, fans seem to approve of the idea of receiving either new Vocations or a proper story expansion. In an experience where there is already a relatively high level of build diversity utilized in a multitude of similar combat encounters, however, one of these routes appears to be far more promising for the time being.

Vocations Cover Many Playstyles in Dragon’s Dogma 2
The Diversity of Vocations is One of DD2’s Strengths
One of the most notable features built upon inDD2, Vocations now go beyond the structure of the nine that were available in the first game. The Archer acts as a fourth base class alongside the previous three, and brand-new archetypes likethe illusion summoning Trickster and all-rounder Warfarerdon’t necessarily fit the same mold of hybrid and advanced Vocations established in the originalDD. The Mystic Spearhand replaces the Mystic Knight while Magick Archer gets some refinement, but most players have found this new set of options more engaging in terms of replayability.
These essentially manage to cover all the key roles found in RPGs, with the likes of Warfarer taking special attention to master for those who want to go beyond one Vocation’s limits. One aspect ofDD2that has only become more obvious in the wake of players mastering combat is the relatively small area and lack of enemy variety found withinthe open world of Vermund and Battahl, but Capcom going the route of the praisedDragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisenmoving forward could easily remedy this.
An Expansion Could Benefit Dragon’s Dogma 2’s World and Narrative
Surpassing a Standard Narrative of Vague Lore
It features a compelling scenario regarding the conflict between Arisen and dragon and how these have affected the world’s kingdoms, but many players agree thatDragon’s Dogma 2is a title with much more of a emphasis on gameplay than storytelling. The complexities of this new parallel universe separate from the firstDDand the intervention of the Pathfinder provide some depth for fans of deep fantasy lore, but there’s far more ambiguity around novel concepts like the Worldforged and Brine than what is seen in other IPs. A story-based DLC has the potential to address these ideas in a way that enhances their appearances in the base game, while bringing more context to the chaoticUnmoored World ofDragon’s Dogma 2’s true ending.
Leaving Vermund and Battahl
TheDark Arisenexpansion for the firstDDis often praised as a necessary addition, and its main contribution was the introduction of an entirely new zone in Bitterblack Isle. While it’s true thatthe map ofDragon’s Dogma 2’s worldis about four times the size of the original game’s, it’s also worth noting that it still only matches up to approximately the size of just one ofElden Ring’s biggest zones, for example. Exploring a new land could not only provide more unique environments and context toDD2, but also come with some much-needed enemy variety that allows players to test out a wider array of their Vocation’s abilities. If it continues to be supported with DLC for years, however, it’s not out of the question that an improved edition could also feature more Vocations that follow alongside story content.
