Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s time machine is finally here, and it even allows fans to play as the fan favorite fused warriors, Vegito and Gotenks. Time travel is not without its problems, though, and there are some importantthings fans should know about the time machine. One question some have found themselves wondering is whether or not Vegito and Gotenks can actually be leveled up through repeated use of the time machine, and some light testing has revealed a tentative answer to that question. Unfortunately, it seems that Vegito and Gotenks both have set levels that cannot be raised through traditional means, essentially nulling the the chances that these characters will be added as fully playable characters.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, although well received, was heavily criticized for its treatment of the fan favorite characters Gotenks and Vegito. These two are arguably the strongest characters inDragon Ball Z, yet they are only playable in three fights during the main story between the two of them, twice as Gotenks against Super Buu and once as Vegito against Super Buu. This problem is compounded because they weren’t playable during the end game free roam portion, and even after the time machine’s addition can only be used to fight Super Buu over and over again.

Vegito and Gotenks' Level in DBZ: Kakarot

Many fans players assumed incorrectly that Vegito and Gotenks' level was based directly on the level of the two Saiyans that fused to make them up. That said, because of the fast pace of the story at these two’s introduction and the inability to replay missions, no testing was done to determine the accuracy of this assumption. The time machine removes one of those limitations, and it immediately became clear thatGotenks and Vegito’s levelis not tied to that of Trunks and Goten or Vegeta and Goku respectively.

It also seems that Vegito and Gotenks' levels always are set to a certain value, a fact which can be confirmed by watching any of the numerous recordings of their battles inDBZ: Kakarot. Gotenks seems to start at level 69 (which could possibly be an intentionaljoke about how childish Gotenks is), while Vegito makes his appearance at level 75, but this is not anything unusual. Every character that becomes playable at some point starts at a certain level relative to their power; the question is whether this level can be increased.

How to Play as Vegito in DBZ Kakarot

Leveling Up Vegito

Getting an S Rank against Super Buu as Vegito without any experience boosts from food (and with a maxed out training community board) provides around 100,000 experience points. Given thatlevel 100 Bonyugives around 400,000 experience points with all exp boosts and can level up a level 75 character after battling only once or twice, it seems likely that a handful of bouts with Super Buu should level Vegito up from 75 to 76. Through testing, over a million experience points were gathered during the battle with Super Buu, and Vegito didn’t level up once.

Unfortunately, this points to the likelihood that these two characters in particular cannot be leveled up, although it doesn’t necessarily rule it out. One can’t prove a negative after all, and more extensive testing could be done on this in the future. It is a possibility that Vegito requires more experience to level up than other characters do, but it is also possible that the experience value granted bydefeating Super Buuas Vegito is instead split among other characters that aren’t in the party or just given to Goku and Vegeta instead. The same goes for Gotenks, although no attempt to level him up was made.

The Problem With Fusion in DBZ: Kakarot

Digging deeper further decreases the likelihood of seeing these two characters as playable characters in any capacity besides farming Super Buu. For example, any time the player time travels, they are able to modify their characters' skill trees and loadouts before starting the episode they’ve traveled back to. This feature is certainly useful, but for some reason it doesn’t extend to Vegito and Gotenks, despite both being the only playable characters in the periods players can travel back to. In Vegito’s case,Goku and Vegetaare shown separately on the menu, but in Gotenks' case, the menu is completely inaccessible.

This means it is likely that neither of the characters even have skill trees worked up, and the loadout can’t even be changed (which is annoying because many players prefer to keep loadouts similar between characters). If this is the case, do these characters even have stat menus and experience bars in the traditional way that others do, or are they just meant to beone time charactersand nothing more? Most fans hope that this isn’t the case, but it seems it may be a lot more work for developers to add these characters in other capacities than originally thought.

Adding Vegito and Gotenks to DBZ: Kakarot

While it is true that both Vegito and Gotenks already have movesets and some skills programmed into the game, there is a lot more which goes into creating a playable character that makes these two more difficult to include than it seems.Dragon Ball Z: Kakarotkeeps track of power levelamong individual characters, and each character’s stats scale differently (for example, Vegeta’s Ki Attack is much higher than Goku’s, but Goku has better Physical Attack). Furthermore, it wouldn’t make much sense for level 250 Goku and Vegeta to fuse into a level 75 Vegito, so developers would likely have to base the fusion’s power off the base forms.

While this isn’t impossible to do, it certainly isn’t something that can be achieved overnight. Should thesetwo fused characters be added to the roster, they will have to be handled differently than traditional characters in terms of how they scale, how food affects them, and how their skill trees are handled. For those completionists discouraged by the inability to max out Gotenks and Vegito’s level, take heart in knowing that due to the cutscenes and loading screens that occur before the player gets to fight as these characters, the grinding process would take far longer than it did for other characters fighting Bonyu.
