There is a great disturbance in the Force. Disney+ just sent waves of strange energy through the universe by announcingTheLEGO Star Wars Holiday Special. No, the name isn’t just a coincidence. The short feature is specifically aiming to pay homage to the infamous 1978Star Wars Holiday Special.

Set to premiere in November on Disney+, the special is looking to be a tribute not only to its 1978 predecessor, but also to other classic holiday staples. Featuring LEGO versions of classic and modernStar Warscharacters, the project will bring the various eras together in a celebration of Life Day, theStar Warsstand-in for real-world holidays introduced in the originalHoliday Special.

The Star Wars Holiday Specialis infamous for a reason. Several reasons, in fact. It aired in a time where everyone got a sugary sweet, soft-focused, celebrity-laden variety special for any reason they could conceive, and it still outshone many of them as the most awkward and kitschy thing viewers had seen this side ofLaugh-In. Centering around Chewbacca’s wookiee family just trying to prepare for Life Day on their home planet of Kashyyyk while that nasty ol' Empire kept trying to ruin everything, the loose overarching plot was merely in place to allow for a multitude of bizarre segments featuringa star-studded cast. Aside from the mainStar Warsactors, the special also brought on talent like Bea Arthur, Art Carney, and Harvey Korman. Even serial name-changing band Jefferson Starship got their own slot.

The special was so poorly received initially that no official releases of it were ever produced. However it hasn’t stopped fans from sharing it far and wide via bootleg video tapes and any other method available. That effort seems to have paid off, asTheLEGO Star WarsHoliday Specialhas proven its permeation of public consciousness. This new special will center around Rey and her little droid buddy BB-8 as they set out on an introspective quest. A visit to an old Jedi temple sends the duo tumbling through time and space, allowing them to meet characters from all over theStar Warsmythos, before eventually returning to Kashyyyk to celebrate Life Day with her friends.

It’s cheesy, it’s strange, and… it looks like it’s going to be so much fun. According to executive producer Josh Rimes, “it’s a celebration of the saga. A lot of characters will be interacting with different characters and perhaps even different versions of themselves at different ages.” Many fans will be hard pressed to deny that this is something they’ve wanted to see deep down in their hearts for the longest time. Even if they prefer the more serious stuff,a little light-heartedStar Warsfunmay be just what some people need right now. “It’ll bring a little joy to this world in this very, very crazy year we’re having,” Rimes hopes.

This basically feels like an animated version of everyone’s childhood. With references to the past as well as the present, fans of all ages will likely find something to enjoy when the special releases. No word on whether it will feature a LEGO cooking show, but maybe it’s best to keep people in suspense.

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Specialwill premiere on November 17th onDisney+.
