Destiny 2’s weekly maintenance and downtime is changing with the upcoming Season 21, Season of the Deep, according to Bungie’s latest blog post. This is becauseDestiny 2’s hardware infrastructure is getting some hefty upgrades, which will require some additional attention and maintenance going forward.
With the launch oftheDestiny 2:Lightfallexpansion, Bungie completely revamped the armor mods system, and also added Guardians Ranks to the game. However, after hearing a lot of player complaints about several aspects of the game feeling unbalanced, Bungie released a massive mid-season patch which rebalanced a lot of stuff from weapons to armor mods. There are a number of other changes arriving with Season of the Deep, most of which are targeted towards Exotic armor and weapons. Now, Bungie has revealed that it has stabilized the game by upgrading its hardware, which will spell a compulsory weekly downtime on reset days.

The post starts by summarizing the updates arriving with Season 21, and further explains exactly how the hardware changes will improve the game’s uptime, and thatDestiny 2will be taken offline for 1.5 hours on update days. “As part of the work to prepare forLightfall, we embarked on a large technical upgrade to improve ourDestiny 2services and hardware. This work included updating our services to use new technologies as well as preparing for hardware upgrades,” the post reads. However, it doesn’t mention whether the downtime for the game will be before or after reset, which is something that could be revealed directly at the launch ofDestiny 2Season of the Deepnext week.
Destiny 2players have complained about server issuessince before the launch ofLightfall, so this upgrade is something several community members have applauded even though the game is being brought offline every week for a limited time. This will also look to resolve the annoying error codes players have complained about during Crucible matches and Raids that have disrupted gameplay experience time and again.
Apart from these changes, Bungie is giving an extreme makeover to enemy elemental shields in the game. These are the combatant shields pertaining to a specific Guardian subclass, which have already been tweaked in a way when theMatch Game modifier was removed fromDestiny 2’s endgame activities. Now, they’re getting a visual facelift where instead of the usual cylindrical shape, these shields will now be spherical, which has received mixed reactions from the players. Aside from this, the post has also revealed the Artifact mods arriving with Season 21, which clearly indicates a shift towards the Arc subclass, which many felt was neglected in the current season.
Destiny 2is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
