Dead Island 2launched its first trailer back in 2014, announcing that the sequel to the popular zombie gameDead Islandthat released back in 2011. There’s been a few other titles linked to theDead Islandfranchise, such asDead Island: Riptide, though a mainline sequel for the game is yet to be released. The game received a mixed response from critics, citing gameplay bugs and technical issues as being rife within the game, however it still performed well where sales are concerned, having sold over 5 million copies.

The zombie genre of games was incredibly popular back in the early 2010s, with titles likeCall of Duty Zombies,Left 4 Dead 2andThe Walking Deadgiving players varied experiences of an infectious apocalypse. However, the popularity of unique zombie games still seems to be high, as proven by thehigh sales figures of Dying Light 2. As theDying Lightseries offers a similar open single player experience to the originalDead Island, many are wondering where the announced sequel to that game is.

Apart from the occasional confirmation by publisher Deep Silver that the game is still in the works, news has been sparse onDead Island 2since 2014. The game has been through multiple developers, though now it seems that the game may be on track for a release, as recent news has stated thatDead Island 2’sdevelopment is going well. Embracer Group, the company currently in charge of Deep SIlver, recently held an equity meeting, where the company was asked on the status of the game. Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors said ““I can’t talk about Dead Island 2 because it’s not announced as such from the publisher.”

While this exchange did not directly confirm anything, it did imply thatDead Island 2is on the horizon, and all that is required is an announcement from publisher Deep Silver. According to insider Tom Henderson,Dead Island 2is in expected to be releasing any time between late 2022 and early 2023, putting an end to the nine-year wait that many fans have been enduring. Considering the recent success of the aforementionedDying Light 2though,Dead Island 2will likely have to create some differencebetween itself and the former game.

ThoughDeep Silver’s confirmation of active developmentonDead Island 2never instilled much confidence, the news and speculation around the game now indicates that the wait may finally be finally coming to an end. All that is needed now is a confirmation by the publisher itself.
