Imagine a TV show with the raw comic book-inspired animation style of early ’90s cartoons mixed with nostalgic Nintendo game layouts, John Carpenter’s cinematography, and cyberpunk overtones. These are just a few terms that can be used to describe the long-anticipated and recently announcedNetflixTV showCaptain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix.
On June 12th, Indian-American film producer Adi Shankar announced his new animated TV showCaptain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remixcan be anticipated to stream on Netflix. Viewers can expectCaptain Laserhawkto be what Shankar called “a love letter to everything [’90s kids] grew up with as ’90s kids” and more. From images and short clips that have been released via Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, the show promises to encompass a vast cyberpunk dystopia riddled with synthwave aesthetics, a daunting cityscape, and a Western hero full of sabotage. As described by Shankar in his announcement video, the basis for the show is drawn from many inspirations. Shankar name-drops the comic seriesElseworlds, TV showCaptain N: The Game Master, as well as his own film seriesBootleg Universeas some of the main influences. The “Blood Dragon” mention in the title also seems to allude to aFar Cry 3expansion by the same name. The show will feature a mix of animation styles, calling on all facets of animated TV, video games, and comic series from the late ’80s and early ’90s.
The show takes place in the 1950s and centers around cybernetically altered super-soldier Dolf Laserhawk, who plans to act on a sort of heist after escaping the army. Living in aBlade Runner-typetech-noirparallel universe, as described by Shankar, Dolf rivals a dominating tech company that exudes power over the economy and all members of that universe. This tech company, called Eden, exacts widespread automation that is largely successful until the chaos that ensues under Dolf Laserhawk (and his boyfriend Alex).
Shankar has an unforgettable (and sometimes controversial) reputation in TV and animation, working on projects such asCastlevania,Dredd,The Grey, among his personal endeavors. Plus,Shankar has risen to the forefrontof animation and has been working closing with Ubisoft over the past few years, so fans of his work have hoped to see him in the driver’s seat for other animated series under the company.
Although it is unclear when exactly the release date for the show will be,Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remixwill undoubtedly become a must-watch for fans of comic books and animated series alike. Ubisoft and Netflix have teamed together, assuring a series of new shows to debut in the next few years.
