A new mode has been announced forCall of Duty: Modern Warfareand it is something the series hasn’t seen sinceInfinite Warfare. The mode is called Cranked and it is part of the latest update forModern Warfarethat is adding new operators, bug fixes, and bringing back some classic maps from the originalModern Warfaregames.
Cranked is the latest addition toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare’sstable of competitive multiplayer modes. The mode originated inCall of Duty: Ghostsand was also included inInfinite Warfare.According to the Activision blog post where it was announced, “Cranked is a fast-paced, high octane Deathmatch where players race against the clock to get kills or suffer an explosive fate.” Another blog post detailing the new content will go up on the Activision blog tomorrow.

This isn’t a whole new portion of the game like therumored battle royale modewould be, but simply a new multiplayer mode that the franchise hasn’t seen in awhile. In previous games Cranked was a mode where kills earned players a bonus, giving them faster movement speed, reload, and ADS. After this first kill, players would get 30 seconds to get another kill or assist and reset the timer. If the player failed to get a kill or assist within the time limit, they would explode. It’s unclear if theModern Warfareteam will tweak or update the mode to fit its new game.
In addition to new modes and operators,Modern Warfareis bringing back Shipmentand Vacant, both classic maps from the originalCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Shipment is a fan favorite fromCall of Duty 4,where stacks of shipping containers created tight spaces and impossible sight lines that made it one of the bloodiest and most frantic maps in that game. A reimagined version of Shipment is coming to the Gunfight mode and standard multiplayer, while Vacant will be added to the 6v6 Multiplayer map rotation.
Like the updates before it, there is a lot to unpack from this latest blog post. However, one of the biggest gripes about the game still hasn’t brought back the original Gunfight mode. This mode was in rotation for a short time before being replaced with Gunfight OSP, which fans generally aren’t as hot on. On Sunday, aModern Warfaredev responded to a tweet from streamer Ninja claiming thatGunfight will be return soon, and it’s expected to come back in the December 18 update.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
