While the post simply cites “reports of an issue” as the reason, players and insiders have reported the reason is due to a malicious malware string making the rounds through the game. Reportedly, the malware is a “worm,” meaning that the virus could potentially spread unknowingly between infected players. No confirmation was given as to whenModern Warfare 2’s serverswould be brought back online.
While theCall of Dutyvirus may have potentially infected several players' computers, the issue is far from the first time bad actors have found their way into modern games.PopularMinecraftmod platforms CurseForge and Bukkitwere reportedly victims of malware attacks last month, targeting several popular mods like “Better Minecraft” and “Sky Villages.“Call of Dutyhas also seen similar malware issues in the past, withWarzonepreviously dealing with malware infections through in-game cheats.

Leaks have also suggested classic features like reload canceling and the Ninja perk may also return with the third modern reboot.
