Summary
There aren’t too many certainties in the world of video games, but one definite is that there will be a newCall of Dutyrelease this year. Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, a 2024 iteration ofCall of Dutyis all but guaranteed at this point, with it likely marking the 20th annual release in a row for the military shooter franchise. And ifCall of Duty’s long-running release pattern wasn’t enough evidence that a new game is probably coming in 2024, then the wealth of rumors and leaks currently surrounding the project might be.
With a project as big as a newCall of Dutygame, it’s a simple expectation that some information is going to be leaked about the game before its official reveal, and long before its eventual launch, and that’s certainly been the case forCall of Duty’s 2024 entry. Allegedly titledCall of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War, this year’s installment will once again be helmed by Treyarch, but Raven Software will reportedly be taking the reins of its campaign, and if the rumors are to be believed, it’s making a big change by shifting to an open-world format. With this already being a big change, taking another leap to add co-op could be worth the risk.

Call of Duty 2024’s Campaign Should Be Co-Op
Call of Duty 2024’s Campaign Rumors Explained
Back at the start of February 2024, renownedindustry leaker Tom Henderson- writing for Insider Gaming - posted a report that claimed thatCall of Duty2024 would feature an open-world campaign. ThoughCall of Dutyhas dabbled with more open-ended campaign structures in the past, such asModern Warfare 3’s Open Combat missions,Call of Duty2024 will apparently be fully embracing an open-world structure, allegedly being more akin toFar Crythan anythingCall of Dutyhas tackled before.
According to this report from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, and a number they’ve written both before and after,Call of Duty2024 will also be set during the Gulf War, hence itsrumored titleCall of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War. Players will be able to travel around the map via vehicles as well as access fast travel points dotted around the open-world. Henderson also mentioned thatCall of Duty2024’s open-world campaign will feature linear missions as well, but it was unclear how many would be in the game upon its rumored October 2024 release.
It’s Time for Another Co-Op Call of Duty
Generally speaking,an open-worldCall of Dutycould show a great deal of promise, just as long as it is handled correctly.Call of Duty: Warzonehas proven that open-world traversal and map design comes naturally to Raven Software, so tasking the studio with the series' first open-world campaign seems like a smart choice. But this isn’t the only bold feature thatCall of Duty2024 should add to its campaign.
ThoughCall of Dutyalmost always features some kind of cooperative third mode, it’s very rarely offered a co-op campaign experience. In fact, there have only been two co-op campaigns inCall of Duty’s 20-year lifetime, both of which have come from Treyarch. WhileCall of Duty: World at WarandCall of Duty: Black Ops 3didn’t have the greatest co-op campaign experiences, they were still fun enough, and though Treyarch apparently isn’t working on this year’s campaign, it would be great to see its penchant for co-op gameplay filter its way down intoCall of Duty2024’s campaign. An open-world structure just feels like the perfect place to bring co-op back toCall of Duty’s campaigns.
